Nanoscientist Seth Darling (NST) will present “Climate Disruption: What We Can Do Now” Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at 7 p.m. at the McCormick Foundation Center Forum, 1870 Campus Drive, Evanston. The event is sponsored by Chicago Area Peace Action and the Environmental Science, Engineering and Policy Programs of Northwestern University.

 Abstract

The Earth has warmed by almost two degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. This seemingly small increase in global warming explains why much of the land ice on the planet is starting to melt, the oceans are rising at an accelerating pace, and weather extremes are becoming common. Climate researchers have concluded that human activities associated with the release of greenhouse gases are the primary culprit. If emissions continue unchecked, global warming will exceed eight degrees Fahrenheit and significantly transform the planet, undermining its capacity to support a large human population. This presentation will focus on the evidence of climate disruption and lay out the options available to us to secure a sustainable future.

About the Presenter

Seth Darling’s current research blends chemistry, physics, nanoscience, and materials science and engineering to create and study materials for energy and water.

Recent studies have focused on design of next-generation solar energy devices, new architectures for water purification, and advanced lithography techniques based on sequential infiltration synthesis.

He serves as the Solar Energy Systems strategy leader for the laboratory and has developed new models of the economics and life cycle assessment of solar energy.
