Some sidewalks and roads on the Argonne site will be closed to walkers and joggers Monday, June 26, 2017, as water storage tanks are inspected with unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs (“drones”).
The UAVs will be operated by Argonne employees who are U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) certified and qualified pilots.
DOE regulations require that unauthorized pedestrians stay 500 feet away from the work area; this does not apply to vehicle traffic.
During the inspection, signs will be posted near the work area. Infrastructure Systems-Utility employees will be nearby to alert pedestrians and restrict unauthorized access. Individual tank inspections are not expected to exceed four hours.
