Here are five ways you can recycle on campus:
- All-in-one recycling bins: Argonne’s all-in-one recycling bins enable you to place all of your recyclable waste in one bin without needing to separate plastic, paper, metal and glass. More information about this quick-and-easy recycling method is available on Inside Argonne.
- Batteries: Designated containers are used to collect small, used batteries in almost every building on campus. Ask your building manager where your nearest battery collection center is located. Details about battery recycling, including info on how to tape battery ends before disposing of them and what to do with large or leaking batteries, are available on Inside Argonne.
- Electronics: To recycle electronics, fill out Material Move Order (ANL-8). If deemed recyclable, your electronics will be consolidated with Fermilab’s and sent to Acme Electronics Recycling. Additional information on electronic waste recycling is available on Inside Argonne.
- Moratorium waste: Argonne has a new process for disposal of moratorium waste metals from radiological facilities. These materials have the potential for volumetric radiological contamination, typically from accelerator facilities where radioactivation is possible. Prior to DOE-STD-6004: Clearance and Release of Personal Property from Accelerator Facilities being released last year, these materials were prohibited from being reused or recycled.
- Toner cartridges: Depending on if the cartridge is full or empty, you simply contain the cartridge and then place it in your building’s T-run area for return to Building 46. Detailed instructions on how to recycle toner cartridges can be found on Inside Argonne.
