Argonne has contracted two engineering firms to complete a campus-wide retro-commissioning (RCx) program to assess the energy-using systems of 37 buildings. This process identifies, investigates and executes operational and maintenance improvements within existing buildings. A building’s energy-using systems, such as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, are evaluated, tested and optimized on the basis of recommendations provided by the RCx contractors.
During the next three months, RCx contractors, along with team members from the Facilities Division, will be conducting building walkthroughs. The RCx program will run until 2020.
The walkthroughs will have minimal impact on all laboratory, mission critical and experimental spaces. The contractors and Facilities team members will be accessing mechanical and electrical rooms utilizing nondisruptive and noninvasive methods. Building occupants will be notified if their building is scheduled for RCx.
This program is part Argonne’s Site Sustainability Plan. Energy auditing and RCx are industry standard methods used to improve performance of existing buildings, and the benefits are to save costs and energy on operations and improve thermal comfort for building occupants.
The following buildings will be evaluated:
