Argonne Fire Department Battalion Chief Jerome P. Rivette, Jr. (STE) received a Gold Spot Award in June 2017 for putting together, setting up and executing a two-part “hands-on” scenario training course for all Argonne firefighters. The course, held at Argonne Park, was spread over a three-day period and included exercises in team work, team building, strategizing, communicating, overcoming obstacles and firefighter rescue while all participants were in full personal protective equipment (PPE) and had on self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Real-life exercises, such as this course provided, helps keep firefighters dialed into the risks associated with their profession and in practice for how to deal with potential safety concerns under realistic conditions (e.g., when wearing PPE).

Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).

If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting Spot Award (ANL-758).

The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.

Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
