Joseph Budz (AES) received a Gold Spot Award in June 2017 for developing a tool that improved the process of validating the operation of photon shutters more efficiently and eliminated awkward body positioning when conducting inspections of the shutters.

The AES Safety Interlocks Group validates the proper operation of more than 175 radiation safety and photon shutters installed at the APS User beamlines. Each shutter has switches interlocked into the personnel safety systems. These switches need to be tested regularly for proper operation. While doing so, the engineers had to maneuver themselves in precarious positions to conduct the tests in difficult to reach places.

Budz took it upon himself to design a pendent that can be used to operate the shutter remotely. This pendent can be used from a safe location to perform the required tests, eliminating unnecessary body constrictions and improving workplace ergonomics.

Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).

If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting Spot Award (ANL-758).

The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.

Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
