Educational Programs is seeking computer scientist volunteers to visit schools during Argonne’s third annual Hour of Code initiative. Held during Computer Scientist Education Week, Dec. 4-10, 2017, the initiative helps schools participate in Hour of Code activities and provides students with computer scientist role models. Last year 45 Argonne scientists visited 49 schools.
Volunteer program details:
- Volunteers register and select their preferences.
- Schools register and select their preferences.
- Educational Programs matches each volunteer with a school(s) based on preferences.
- Each volunteer prepares a 10-minute presentation about their work (Educational Programs will provide a template for this during a one-hour training session).
- Volunteers visit the school on the day selected and present to a class or multiple classes (minimum volunteer time during the school visit is two hours; volunteers are welcome to stay up to the entire day).
- After the presentation, the teacher will lead the class in coding activities while the volunteer assists students.
Hour of Code is a worldwide movement designed to demystify code and demonstrate that anyone can learn the basics. It also serves to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
