Jing Lu Petersen (FAC) received a Gold Spot Award for her attentive identification of an electrical hazard and her actions taken to have it resolved.
Petersen was directed to initiate a water spill cleanup near the Advanced Photon Source ring. She noticed that the water spill had puddled below various electronic devices and was making clear contact with energized wires. Upon identifying the electrical hazard, Petersen immediately reported the issue to Safety Specialist Craig Wagner. Petersen addressed her concern for her safety and that of the employees working in the area. Recognizing the seriousness of the hazard, Wagner blocked off the area and began contacting the necessary personnel to assist in de-energizing the equipment. Immediately, maintenance secured the power, removed the wires from the water and Petersen was able to safely mop and dry the area.
Thanks to Petersen’s alertness and assertive actions, the hazard was mitigated and the cleanup was conducted safely.

Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting xink form Spot Award (ANL-758).
The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.
Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
