Dear Colleagues,

I am honored to be named Argonne’s Laboratory Director. As you know, this is an extraordinary place and a powerhouse of talent. We have a long history of driving discovery and innovation, and our future is equally exciting.

As my tenure begins, I look forward to continuing the progress we have made. Together, we will chart a path which builds on our strengths, creating a laboratory known for its scientific leadership, operational excellence and lasting impact. We will focus on the basics, execute on our mission and concentrate on the rigor and quality of our work. Nothing succeeds at Argonne without each of you and our strong workforce is a hallmark of our success. We stand committed to continue developing a safe and inclusive environment for each of us to thrive.

Our broad capabilities, from materials science, physics, and biology to computation and analysis to one-of-a-kind scientific user facilities, position us for even greater impacts. Building on our foundation, we are pursuing strategic directions in science, engineering and technology in advanced materials and chemistry, upgrading the Advanced Photon Source, exploring the universe as our laboratory and developing an exascale supercomputer by 2021. We also have several emerging opportunities in quantum information, manufacturing science and engineering, and securing energy and critical resources.

The laboratory is a special place where our combined assets — our talent, our tools, and our time, are all devoted to world-class science and engineering, creating something greater than the sum of the parts. I am proud to have the opportunity to lead an exceptional organization with an imperative mission, dedicated to transforming the world around us through advances in energy, environment and national security.

Thank you for your continued support. Together we will do great things and I welcome your feedback and ideas. Please join me on Thursday, November 30, in the Building 213 Cafeteria anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. as we celebrate our successes and look to the future.  Add to Your Calendar

As always, I can be reached at listen@anl.gov. Over the next month, my weekly “Conversations with Kearns” will move to a variety of locations and times to provide greater access and opportunity to hear your impressions and suggestions as we work together to move Argonne forward.

Best regards,

Paul
