Safety Share: McCallum saves parent from potential electrical incident

On a recent trip to his parents’ home, David McCallum (TCP) discovered an outdoor extension cord that had a frayed outer jacket and exposed bare conductors.

“[My dad] had bought the cord at about the same time that I was born,” said McCallum. “I bought a replacement cord and threw the old one into the trash — after cutting off the connectors and warning my dad not to scavenge pieces of the cord.”

Takeaways:

  • Inspect extension cords and other electrical equipment for defects before use.
  • If you have elderly parents, check their home for safety hazards when you visit. A potentially hazardous situation may appear quite “normal” to someone familiar with it.

For more information, check out this safety share, courtesy of David McCallum (TCP). Feel free to print this info and use it to help kick off a team discussion at your next meeting with colleagues and/or staff.

All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.

Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
