It seems that winter has finally arrived and with that, we need to use extra caution when driving in and outside campus. Snow, slush and icy roads can make it harder for drivers to see, slow down and stop. All of these are major factors that can increase the chances of an accident.
These 7 tips will help keep you safe and incident free this winter:
- Give yourself additional driving time and make sure to wear appropriate footwear and outerwear.
- Before you leave your driveway or parking lot, make sure you take time to clear snow and ice off your vehicle. This includes windows, mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof, trunk and tires.
- Remember, speed limits are meant for dry roads. Lowering your speed on roadways and in parking lots is highly suggested during winter weather. All laboratory roads are posted at 30 MPH or less and all parking lots are posted at 15 MPH. Use extra caution in parking lots on campus. There can be vehicles going different directions as well as pedestrians walking to their vehicles.
- Be on the lookout for snow plows. If a plow is coming toward you, make sure to allow plenty of room for it to pass. Do not pass a plow unless you are in a passing zone and the road ahead of you is clear.
- Eliminate distractions including smart phones. Driving in winter weather can be challenging for even the most experienced driver. Devote your full attention to the road and changing weather conditions.
- Be cautious of black ice. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. If the weather is cold enough for it, it’s probably present.
- Report all slippery conditions to safety@anl.gov or call ext. 2-2582 to have slippery areas addressed immediately.
