Carl Crouthamel, who worked at Argonne from 1950 to 1985, died on Jan. 13, 2018, in Bothell, Washington, at the age of 97.
Crouthamel worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry and physics from Iowa State College. At Argonne, Crouthamel worked with fuel reprocessing analytical chemistry and radiochemical methods development, monitoring performance for the Experimental Breeder Reactor-1 (EBR-I). He also worked in the development of sodium iodide-thallium activated gamma-ray spectrometers and was a group leader for the Reactor Chemistry Group. Later, he worked on projects for the liquid metal fast reactor program and the EBR-II reactor.
Crouthamel was a former resident of Glen Ellyn. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marion and second wife Jean. He is survived by his three sons, their spouses and four grandchildren.
