According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), winter driving requires extra care, including tire maintenance. Specialty winter tires can be an effective choice for safe travel in snowy areas.
Advantages of winter tires
- Winter tires are made from rubber that remains pliable and supple in extremely cold temperatures.
- Recently designed snow tires without studs have been tested to be as effective as some studded snow tires.
- Even with the safety features on today’s cars — all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes and traction control — winter tires can help. They can keep a car moving, pushing the snow through the treads, and they can grip the road, allowing a car to stop faster and potentially avoiding an accident.
What do I need to check on my tires?
- Regardless of the season or the type of tires on your vehicle, be sure they are inflated to the correct pressure.
- Make sure the tires on your vehicle have the proper tread depth and that they are not worn or damaged.

All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library, available on Box. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.
Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
