In February, during the last severe snowstorm of the season, Claybourne White (PSC) assisted the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in providing continuity of operations by superintending facility users’ safety overnight.

The APS operates on a 24/7 basis, and users visiting the lab often stay at the Guest House. Thus, they can remain safely on site during a severe storm that compels most of the rest of us to hurry home.

When the snow storm struck, White volunteered to remain at the laboratory two consecutive nights. By remaining on duty, White ensured that an APS presence remained on the Experiment Hall Floor and that an APS Floor Coordinator would be available to assist APS users as needed.

Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).

If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting Spot Award (ANL-758).

The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.

Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
