Argonne’s Earth Day event will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Building 213 cafeteria. Add to your calendar.
The event will feature Argonne programmatic research exhibits, interactive displays, giveaways and a photo booth. The event will also include community partners and “green” programs, clubs and services available to you.
Argonne research displays will include:
Chain Reaction Innovations
“The Chicago River Microbiome Project” presented by Mark Grippo, Environmental Science, Argonne National Laboratory
“Climate Change and the Wastewater Sector” presented by Molly Finster, Decision and Infrastructure Sciences, Argonne National Laboratory
“Data-driven Design of Building Blocks for High Efficient Dye-sensitized Solar Cells” presented by Álvaro Vázquez-Mayagoitia, Computational Science, Argonne National Laboratory
“Earthquakes in Washington State: Magnitude 9.0 Seismic Event Impacts to Regional Transportation Systems” presented by Thomas Wall, Energy and Global Security, Argonne National Laboratory
“Edge Computing on Waggle and Array of Things Nodes” presented by Peter Beckman, Computing, Environment and Life Sciences, and Rajesh Sankaran and Nicola Ferrier, Mathematics and Computer Science, Argonne National Laboratory
- Demonstration: Argonne researchers will demonstrate testing of traffic, weather and environment sensors located within the City of Chicago. There are about 90 sensors located in Chicago now. (May be live or pre-taped.)
“Fuel Cells and Hydrogen: Technologies for a Cleaner Tomorrow” presented by Theodore Krause and John Kopasz, Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Argonne National Laboratory
- Demonstration: Argonne researchers will demonstrate how fuel-cell systems work. They are a cleaner power option than fossil-fuel based technologies. Applications include cars and buses and emergency power for hospitals, cell phone towers and other critical infrastructures.
“Oleo Sponge” presented by Anil Mane, Energy Systems, Argonne National Laboratory
- Demonstration: Mane will demonstrate cleanup of oil from water using the Oleo Sponge. Water contamination from oil and other petroleum products carries with it huge environmental, economic and health impacts. Argonne’s invention, known as Oleo Sponge, offers promise for dramatically improving our ability to combat this problem whether it be a catastrophic oil spill that devastates the Gulf Coast of the United States or chronic issues with contamination in harbors and ports around the world.
