Colleagues,
Each of us fulfills an important role for the lab to be known for original ideas, working safely and delivering lasting impact on society through exemplary research and operations. I value your contributions.
I also value your opinions. I am pleased to see that 62 percent of employees lab-wide — more than half in every programmatic and service directorate — participated in our employee climate survey last October. I thank each of you who added your voice and provided vital feedback to lab leadership.
The survey is essential in evaluating the lab’s progress in building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive work environment. Survey findings indicated statistically significant improvements in four climate indicators since the 2015 baseline survey:
- Lab commitment to diversity
- Division director D&I leadership
- Inclusion and respect
- Professional development
Survey results also highlighted ongoing opportunities for improvement. The climate indicators of supervision and teamwork and collaboration did not change. We have more work to do to improve safety and performance management and to exhibit inclusive behavior.

This first-of-its-kind Argonne event will chart our course for creating an environment where employees feel welcomed, safe and professionally supported, enabling us to deliver excellence in science and technology and operations.
