On April 19, 2016, Rachel Klet, postdoctoral appointee in Chemical Sciences and Engineering, received a Gold Spot Award for displaying positive safety and quality assurance initiative by taking extra steps to be sure that she and her colleagues work in a safe environment.
On one occasion, Rachel noticed that cylinders inside a flammable cage didn’t have chains around them. She found some chains and put them around as many cylinders as the chains could hold.
Securing the cylinders helps prevent the heavy objects from falling and possibly injuring a person or damaging the tank.
Once Rachel had secured as many containers as she could, she contacted the building manager to see what could be done to secure the remaining tanks.
On another occasion, Rachel noticed that some chemicals she had ordered came without radio- frequency identification (RFID) tags. Rachel made her ALD-ESH coordinator aware of the issue and continued to follow up until the issue was resolved. As a result, the chemicals were properly tagged and registered in CORAL, Argonne’s Chemical Ordering, Reporting and Attributes Library.
The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting a Spot Award (ANL-758).
The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.
Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
