The spring 2018 issue of Argonne Now, the laboratory’s semiannual science magazine, will arrive in your inboxes in the next few days.

The magazine’s stories cover many areas of the laboratory — from the history of the Chicago Pile-1 chain reaction and the latest simulations of fluids that flow within nuclear reactors to the imminent upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

One story, “Scientists in Sync,” delves into the scientific challenges and joys of four recently appointed division directors: Cristina Negri (ES), Valerie Taylor (MCS), Kawtar Hafidi (PHY) and Cynthia Jenks (CSE).

Another story, “Beam Us Up,” examines the adventures of Argonne’s scientists as they prepare to upgrade the APS.

Other articles follow environmental scientist Andrew Orr to Antarctica, explore the laboratory’s disaster resilience efforts and investigate Argonne’s faux connection to Netflix’s “Stranger Things” TV show.

Writers from around the lab contributed stories to the issue, with design by Lidia Hernandez and creative direction from Abby Miesen of Argonne’s Creative Services Department.

Please share the magazine with friends, neighbors or relatives who wonder what really goes on at Argonne. These friends or relatives may also subscribe here to receive future copies.

You can find additional copies by contacting ALD offices, by contacting argonnenow@anl.gov, or near the coffee shop in the lobby of Building 201.

We welcome questions, comments or suggestions for the next issue at argonnenow@anl.gov.
