Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are ubiquitous in the commercial world. From navigation systems in cars to our smartphones we find this technology everywhere. But did you know that certain technical information regarding GPS satellite networks is restricted for release under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)?
Under federal law ITAR enumerates specific areas of technology that are applicable to military weapons and support systems. This technology is not classified but restricted for export or disclosure to foreign nationals.
So that electronic gadget that is being developed in the lab down the hall could fall under ITAR. It all depends on what it is and how it can be used. Be aware of what items and technologies may fall under ITAR.
