Summer is here and with that comes an increase in vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic on site. The summer also brings more driver distractions as many of us are rushing to enjoy summer activities.
In the past few weeks, there have been six reported motor vehicle accidents at Argonne, with three occurring in parking lots and three at one of the gates. More than 80 percent of all motor vehicle accidents at Argonne happen within the parking lots or at the gates. The speed limit in parking lots and through all gates is 15 mph. Please remember to slow down and be alert on and off campus when driving or biking.
Tips to help maximize safety on the road:
- Put down your cell phone — it can wait. Cell phone use is strictly prohibited while operating a motor vehicle on site. This begins as soon as you approach any Argonne gate.
- Disable your phone while driving. Many mobile providers offer a feature that sends automatic messages to anyone who calls or messages your phone while in driving mode. See links below for details.
- Plan your route before you leave. If you are not sure where you are going, it’s best to review your route before you get behind the wheel. If using GPS, ensure it is in a place that doesn’t require you to take your eyes off the road.
- Be patient. Traffic volume at the gates can be high, especially during rush hour. Be patient with the vehicles in front of you and always remain in your lane unless signaled by a Protective Force Officer. Always obey an officer’s traffic signals; safety is their number one priority.
- Triple check before backing out. Be aware of blind spots when reversing. Walk around your vehicle before entering to become familiar with objects in the vicinity. Place your vehicle in reverse so other drivers and pedestrians can see your reverse lights. Before reversing your vehicle, check all sides for oncoming traffic, parked vehicles or pedestrians in the area.
- Look out for pedestrians and bicyclists. With the warm weather comes a significant increase of pedestrians and bicyclist on our roadways. Be extra vigilant around crosswalks and always stop for pedestrians in or approaching a crosswalk. Allow at least a three-foot gap when passing pedestrians or bicyclists on the roadway. If another vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, stop to let that vehicle pass before you attempt to pass the pedestrian or bicyclist.
- Choose your music before you drive to eliminate trying to find your favorite playlist or song while driving. Start your music before you begin your drive to help keep your attention on the road.
Safety tips for pedestrians and bicyclists
- Remain alert when walking or biking. Keep your head up and eyes on the road for approaching vehicles.
- Pedestrians are to walk or run against traffic. Bicyclist are to ride with traffic. If a vehicle is approaching too quickly or too closely, stop what you are doing and move off the roadway, there is a chance they do not see you.
