Applications for the 2019 Maria Goeppert Mayer Fellowship are now being accepted for appointments beginning on or after Oct. 1, 2019.

The deadline for submitting application materials is 7 p.m. CDT Monday, Oct. 15 , 2018.

The goal for the Maria Goeppert Mayer Fellowship is to bring new research ideas and capabilities to the lab through the recruitment of top science and engineering talent. These fellowships carry a competitive salary with an additional stipend for research support. Appointments may be renewed on an annual basis for up to three years. To further facilitate the transition of the named fellows into Argonne programs and increase the retention of these promising scientific leaders, the third year of support will be provided 50 percent from the Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program and 50 percent from other sources. Sponsors must address plans for third year funding at the time of nomination as indicated on the Sponsor Nomination Form.

Candidates should have superb research qualifications and show promise of becoming leaders in their fields. Candidates are selected based on their record of achievement, academic accomplishments and the strength of their research proposal. Proposals should demonstrate alignment with the strategic missions of the laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy. Proposals aligned with Quantum Information Sciences and Artificial Intelligence applied to Science are especially encouraged.

Argonne staff considering sponsoring a candidate are strongly encouraged to consult their divisional representative on the Named Fellowship Review Committee, and are expected to discuss the nomination with their division leadership. Sponsors may only nominate one candidate per call. This includes co-nominations. Sponsors should read the sponsor guidelines to ensure the application package meets all requirements and expectations. Applicants will submit proposals using a new proposal template and should read the application instructions before applying. These documents are available through the Argonne Careers site under the Fellowships section. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. Sponsors should advise their candidate to be cognizant of the deadline.

Refer to the detailed guidance for completing the sponsor nomination form. Briefly, sponsors will be asked to address:

  • Nominee’s background and credentials and value to Argonne
  • Merit of proposed research and evidence of project feasibility
  • Alignment with mission
  • Plans for third year 50 percent funding
  • Acknowledgement of sponsor responsibilities and documentation of discussion with divisional leadership

The research project of selected fellows will be managed through the LDRD program. Upon acceptance of the fellowship offer, sponsors will be expected to submit their candidate’s proposal into the LDRD proposal submission system, mentor candidates throughout the fellowship appointment according to LDRD guidelines, and meet reporting requirements.

As announced previously, the review process will run through January 2019 and include Skype interviews with top candidates, followed by interviews with sponsors to address support and future plans for candidates. Please alert the Postdoctoral Office and your division office if you will be on travel during the review period to ensure that your candidate receives full consideration.
