Summer weather and sandals go hand-in-hand, but closed-toe shoes are a much safer option when you’re working, especially in laboratories, outdoors and in areas that require closed-toe or safety shoes.
According to the National Safety Council, 75 percent of job-related foot injury victims were not wearing safety shoes.
Argonne provides a safety shoe allotment of $130 for employees who are required to wear safety shoes for a job function. To request your safety shoes, submit a Request for Safety Shoes (ANL-9). Bring your approved form to the shoe mobile to pick out your safety shoes. If you choose a shoe style that is over $130, you are responsible for paying the difference.
The shoe mobile is available each Monday at:
- Building 200/203 parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon
- Building 360 parking lot from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The shoe mobile will not be available on the Mondays on which a holiday is observed. Instead, it will be available on the Tuesday of that week.
On campus, all individuals are required to wear closed-toe shoes in laboratories or where hazardous chemicals are being used.
LMS-PROC-206: Personal Protective Equipment details shoe and other PPE requirements at Argonne.

Beginning each meeting with a safety share is a great way to break the ice, begin team building from the onset of meetings and keep safety at the forefront of our minds each and every day.
The Safety Share Library is binned by topic area, providing a variety of resources for your convenience.
All employees, groups and divisions are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.
Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected by Environment, Safety and Quality Assurance to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
