A redesign of the Building 401/402 APS plaza, the area in front of the main entrance, will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018. Argonne’s Infrastructure Services is leading the project, which will substantially reduce the amount of concrete in the plaza and add new trees, grass, garden beds and outdoor seating.

“The plaza redesign will enhance the entrance to the APS and provide a better experience for all Argonne employees, APS users and the many visitors who cross the plaza for events at the APS auditorium,” said Stephen Streiffer, director of the APS. “It will also increase the sustainability of the entrance, as well as provide a safer, more ergonomic route to the APS.”

Preliminary work starts on Wednesday, Aug. 22; construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 27, and continue until mid-November. Final landscaping will be completed in spring 2019.

The parking area and plaza in front of the Building 401/402 will be closed to vehicular and foot traffic starting Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Employees, users and visitors are asked to use the other Building 401- and 402-adjacent lots and the overflow lot. Please refrain from parking on roads, which is a traffic hazard.

Accessible parking is available in the Building 402 Lower Gallery lot and the Building 401 Lab-wing parking lot.

Limo and bus pickup and drop-off are available at the 402 Lower Gallery parking lot. VIP parking is located in the Building 401/402 main entrance parking lot row closest to the building.

Pedestrians can enter the building by either following the protected walkway from the Building 401/402 main entrance parking lot to the accessible ramp, which will remain open throughout construction, or using the entrance to the APS 402 Lower Gallery.

The bike rack in front of the building will be removed during construction; please use the bike rack outside of the Building 402 Lower Gallery during construction.
