The Bush family was honored at the Village of Bolingbrook’s annual Pathways Parade in September.

Debbie Bush (NWM), along with her husband, Lee Bush Sr., and their children, were named the Family of the Year by the Village of Bolingbrook as part of the 2018 Citizens of the Year awards. Debbie and her family received the award because they have been the driving force behind “Operation Christmas” for the past two decades.

For Operation Christmas, they coordinate a team of 400 volunteers who collect, sort and set up shop annually at Bolingbrook’s Performing Arts Center supplying Christmas gifts and food for less fortunate families from November through January.

Annually, Mayor Roger Claar and Bolingbrook’s Board of Trustees honor residents whose actions make a significant impact on the local quality of life. The nomination process begins with a search for outstanding residents in three categories: Male, Female and Family of the Year. Consideration for the awards is based upon a wide range of community contributions, including volunteerism, civic engagement, cultural enrichment and an ethical demonstration of leadership that exemplifies excellence.

On Sept. 9, 2018, winners in each category were celebrated at the Village of Bolingbrook’s annual Pathways Parade, where the Operation Christmas float won second place.

Debbie, who has been a safety basis and measuring and test equipment technician for Nuclear Waste Management for almost 15 years, said, “This award means so much to our family. Showing gratitude is one of the simplest, yet most powerful things people can do for each other. Our family does not serve the community to be noticed, but it is wonderful to be noticed for the work we do. May we continue to have a servant heart for those in need for years to come.”
