Argonne’s Sustainable Campus Initiative has been selected for a 2016 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Sustainability Award.

The Sustainability Awards recognize exemplary sustainability contributions of individuals and teams at DOE facilities.

“Sustainable campus initiatives combine well-established best practices and cutting-edge research to produce more efficient facilities, fleet and campus operations,” said Karen Kosky (FMS), sustainability program manager at Argonne. “These efforts save money and reduce harmful emissions and waste all while deploying next-generation clean-campus technologies and practices.”

Over the past year Argonne has added to its sustainable campus program, with projects including:

  • The Combined Heat and Power Plant, which is currently being tested for full use, and is projected to accumulate $52.3 million in energy savings over the next 15 years.
  • Four new High-Performance Sustainable Buildings, which optimize and conserve energy, water and air resources.
  • Stewardship practices leading to a DOE GreenBuy Gold Level Award, which honors DOE sites for their green purchasing habits.

The program stresses engagement, efficiency, pollution prevention, clean energy and climate resilience, based off Argonne’s site sustainability plan.

“Our employees practice sustainability in their everyday work and are inspired to advance campus sustainability,” Kosky said. “It’s part of what makes Argonne a great place to work.”
