The Project Management Organization’s Site Sustainability Program will host a lunch & learn meeting on electronics stewardship and Argonne’s electronics recycling program at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, in Building 214, Room B234.
Overview
Argonne works to reduce the laboratory’s environmental impact by addressing the lifecycle of our products and services. The Sustainability Program supports these efforts with education and employee engagement. Electronics are an essential tool to support the mission of the laboratory and electronic stewardship is the focus on this month’s “Green in Action” brown bag lunch session.
Our guest speaker is Joy Scrogum, from the University of Illinois, Illinois Sustainable Technology Center. She will provide an overview of electronics stewardship opportunities and trends. In addition, information will be presented on Argonne’s electronics recycling program and how it works.
Argonne is working to address three key areas around electronics stewardship: purchasing, power management and end of life stewardship, based on requirements from the U.S. Department of Energy and federal regulations.
Purchasing: Argonne’s goal is to buy EPEAT-registered products for 95 percent of eligible purchases. EPEAT stands for Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. Originally launched by the EPA, it is a tool to help consumers evaluate and select electronic products according to a list of preferred environmental attributes. Argonne’s procurement process includes requirements for eligible products to be EPEAT-registered. Questions about green purchasing requirements and options can be sent to greenbuy@anl.gov
Power management: Argonne’s goal is to have power management settings enabled on 100 perceny of eligible PCs, laptops and monitors. These settings help electronics to save energy and manage performance. Devices centrally managed by Business & Information Services automatically have power management settings. More information on PC power management is available on Inside Argonne.
End of life: Argonne’s goal is to reuse or recycle 100 percent of used electronics using environmentally sound disposition strategies. OCF-Procurement manages electronics recycling from uncontrolled areas. Once processed at Argonne, recyclable electronics are sent to a certified electronics recycling company. Visit Inside Argonne for more information on how to recycle electronics.
