The American Physical Society has named Argonne National Laboratory a historic physics site in recognition of the pioneering work of former Argonne physicist and Nobel laureate Maria Goeppert Mayer.

All employees are invited to celebrate the life and achievements of Maria Goeppert Mayer, a giant in the field of physics at the Maria Goeppert Mayer Historic Site Designation. The event will take place Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at 10 a.m. in the Building 203 Auditorium. A reception will follow.

It was at Argonne that Goeppert Mayer conducted the research for which she received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Representatives of the Society — the world’s second-largest professional association of physicists, with more than 55,000 members — will be on hand to present a plaque to Argonne leadership commemorating Goeppert Mayer’s contributions to the world of science.
