Three local charitable organizations received one-time donations of $2,000 each at the recent Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) reception. Laboratory Director Paul Kearns presented the donations to representatives from the organizations and ACA Co-Chairs Christina Hanks (HRS) and Carol Spencer (FAC), provided opening remarks and introductions.
The ACA steering committee, composed of volunteers from the laboratory’s programmatic and operational divisions, is responsible for managing the annual contribution campaign to charitable agencies.
Each of the organizations receiving the award was recommended by an Argonne employee.

Association of Horizon, recommended by Anthony Meyer (FAC)
Association of Horizon is a community where adults with and without physical disabilities empower and enrich the lives of one another through lifelong friendships and recreation. Horizon Summer Camp, the organization’s flagship program, is Horizon’s primary vehicle for bringing life changing experiences both to campers and volunteers. Horizon’s services are uniquely aimed at serving volunteers and adults with physical disabilities alike.

Operation Christmas of Bolingbrook, recommended by Debbie Bush (NWM)
Operation Christmas makes an exceptional effort each year to ensure that every family in need of assistance during the Christmas season receives assistance. It is an all-year project involving many volunteers from Bolingbrook and the surrounding areas. Last year, the organization served more than 420 families within the community.

The Cove School, recommended by Lisa Wojtasiak (IS)
For 70 years, Cove has served as a vital stepping-stone in our community, helping children with learning disabilities develop the skills and self-confidence required to successfully transition to community schools or post-secondary education. The school provides a comprehensive, individualized approach to learning. Cove recognizes the complex learning needs of students with learning disabilities, and provides the integrated specialized services that contribute greatly to their success.
Stephanie Sanderman, director of Development for the Cove School, accepted the award.
