As you enjoy summer activities, keep these tips in mind.
- Be a smart traveler.
Smart planning and preparation can make a good trip a great one. Arrive early if you’re going to the airport and have your shoes off BEFORE you reach the front of the security line. (You’ll have plenty of time in the waiting queue to get prepared.) Update your passport and other information at least a month before your departure. Make sure your carry-on and checked luggage meet all security requirements before you leave the house. That means doing the research to find out what’s required BEFORE you pack.
If you’re driving, have the car checked by a mechanic before your trip and confirm that fluids are topped off, all lights are checked, the spare tire is in good shape and you have plenty of good tunes on your playlist. Have your route planned in advance and check for construction areas online so you can adjust your route before you get in the car.
- Keep bugs at bay.
When you’re outside enjoying the summer, protect yourself from creepy critters. To avoid mosquitos and ticks — and the diseases they transmit — the CDC recommends that you:
- Wear long-sleeved shirt, long pants and socks.
- Treat clothing with permethrin (a repellent).
- Apply insect repellent to skin.
- Avoid areas that have a high density of mosquitos and apply repellent regularly.
- Check yourself daily (your entire body) for ticks and remove them immediately.
- Avoid road rash.
Wear a helmet when you’re bicycling or riding a motorcycle. It’s way cooler than bandages.
Drivers, keep an eye out for cyclists and pedestrians and give them the right-of-way. Yes, your car is bigger and badder, but so may be your cellmate if you end up serving time for running someone over.
All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.
Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected by Environment, Safety and Quality Assurance to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership
