This call offers you the opportunity to seek FY19 funding in a Director’s Special Call for a new lab-level LDRD Prime focus area, AI + Science. Full proposals are due Friday, March 8, 2019.
Over the past few years, Argonne has ramped up its research activities in artificial intelligence (AI), from both the computer sciences and systems perspectives, as well as from the domain science perspective (X-ray analysis and chemical and materials discovery). Six months ago, two task forces were charged with developing an internal capabilities assessment and needs for AI + Hard X-rays and AI + Materials/Chemistry. Reports or executive summaries from these task forces will be made available on the LDRD website.
A key goal for this call is to put Argonne in a strong position to expand programs that may be especially relevant to the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Basic Energy Sciences (BES) and Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs.
In addition to this LDRD call, a closely related call for proposals from BES was issued on Feb. 7: Data Science for Discovery in Chemical and Materials Science – Lab19-2082.
To encourage formation of ASCR-BES collaborative teams for the LDRD and BES calls, a matchmaking session will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, from 3-5 p.m. in the Building 203 Auditorium. Short presentations by representatives from the AI + X-rays and AI + Materials/Chemistry task forces and on the BES program call will kick off the session. Following that there will be the option for all attendees to make a one-slide/one-minute presentation to communicate their expertise or interest. RSVP by Feb.13 to the LDRD office to participate in the meeting and to submit slides.
