As part of Argonne’s 2019 Earth Day Celebration, the laboratory has partnered with USAgain to host a shoe collection Tuesday, April 2, through Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Collection bins will be placed throughout the lab to provide a convenient way for employees and site occupants to drop off their unwanted shoes for reuse or recycling.
A shoe collection display will be featured at the Earth Day Celebration on Thursday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Building 213 Cafeteria.
To ensure safe collection, please place shoes in a plastic bag before dropping them off at one of the four collection points:
- Building 205 North/Remote Lot
- Building 460 Guest House North Lot
- Building 440 West Lot
- Building 360 Parking Lot
Argonne will receive a penny per pound of donations, with proceeds supporting the Argonne Running Club. Please check with your supervisor prior to donating laboratory-purchased safety shoes. In partnership with USAgain, shoes in wearable condition will be sent for resale to thrift stores, consignment shops and other secondhand clothing markets in the United States and abroad. Shoes not in wearable condition will be reused as furniture stuffing, home insulation, padding and other products.
This event is organized by the Earth Day Working Group. For more information, contact sustainability@anl.gov or ext. 2-5658.
USAgain collects unwanted clothing, household textiles and shoes in order to divert them from landfills. Instead of becoming trash, these items are reworn, reused and recycled both here in the United States and abroad. USAgain has a network of 10,000 collection bins in 17 states. Every week more than one million pounds of textiles are diverted from landfills.
