Argonne leadership and the Technology Commercialization and Partnerships division (TCP) invite Argonne researchers to submit entries for the 2019 R&D 100 Awards.
Each year, Argonne researchers — and researchers across the national laboratory system — submit entries for the R&D 100 Awards. The R&D 100 Awards have served as a prestigious innovation awards program for the past 56 years, honoring great R&D pioneers and their revolutionary ideas in science and technology.
Final entries are due on May 6, 2019. To meet this deadline, entry preparation should begin promptly.
Argonne researchers who win R&D 100 Awards gain visibility and recognition from the scientific/engineering community, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and Argonne leadership. R&D 100 Awards also enhance Argonne’s technology transfer efforts and the lab’s reputation as a whole.
A total of 134 R&D 100 Awards — including four last year — have gone to Argonne researchers since the competition’s inception in 1964.
As in past years, TCP is overseeing and managing the submission of entries. Partnership between the research divisions, TCP and the Communications and Public Affairs division (CPA) in developing strong submissions has been integral to Argonne’s past success. If you have interest in submitting an entry, you are strongly advised to work with TCP and CPA and to start the process now. TCP and CPA have staff members who are well versed in the R&D 100 Awards process and can help ensure you have the best chance at winning an award.
The Awards
R&D 100 Awards are presented annually by R&D magazine to identify the 100 most technologically significant new products or licensable technologies of the prior year. The R&D 100 Awards are highly valued and widely publicized by Argonne and DOE, and are featured in a special edition of R&D magazine. All of the DOE labs are prominently involved in the award competition.
The Requirements
In brief, a successful R&D 100 Award entry will (1) represent an important technical advancement, (2) involve an industry or third party partner, and (3) the technology or product must have been available for purchase or licensing between Jan. 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018.
The Entry Process
- Review the R&D 100 website, particularly the FAQ tab. Take note of eligibility requirements.
