This year’s celebration features two new activities: A site-wide shoe recycling drive and an Earth Day Team Challenge where teams from across the lab compete to have their sustainability ideas funded and implemented.

The shoe recycling drive will take place from April 2 to May 1. Bring your used or unwanted shoes to one of four collection bins located in the following parking lots: Building 460 (Guest House); Building 440 West Lot; Building 360; Building 205 Remote/North. Shoes in wearable condition will be sent for resale to thrift stores, consignment shots and other secondhand clothing markets in the U.S. and abroad. Shoes not in wearable condition will be reused in other products (furniture stuffing, home insulation, padding, etc.).

In the Earth Day Team Challenge, teams from across Argonne will submit sustainability improvement ideas. Everyone who attends the Earth Day celebration on April 18 will have the chance to vote for their favorite idea. The winning idea will be funded and implemented by the laboratory.

The celebration will feature exhibits by researchers from a variety of laboratory disciplines that demonstrate how Argonne accelerates science and technology for U.S. prosperity, interactive displays, giveaways, community partners and “green” programs, clubs and services.

Another returning activity is the Earth Day raffle; make sure to pick up your activity card on the way into the cafeteria. You will have two chances to win: visit at least five R&D displays to get one raffle ticket, and vote for your favorite sustainability idea to receive a second ticket. The first 150 people to submit a raffle ticket will win a reusable Argonne coffee tumbler, and one grand prize winner will receive an Earth Day basket.
