Earth Day team challenge results & raffle winner

The Earth Day Working Group would like to thank all attendees who braved the weather and came out to support Argonne’s 2019 Earth Day event as well as all of the volunteers and staff that made it such a success.

Earth Day raffle winner

Marge Franchini (EGS) won the grand prize, an Earth Day basket.

Team Challenge winner

The Team Challenge winners are Paula Yandrich (PMO), Casey Sullivan (PMO), Jackie Dearborn (PMO) and Jill Ptak (PMO). The team’s idea to convert unused blacktop into greenspace received the most votes and will receive funding for implementation by the laboratory.

In addition, four other entries submitted to the team challenge were great ideas that the Sustainability Program will work to implement in the next year. Congratulations to the following individuals:

  • Building Trash and Recycling Improvements
    Constance Vanni (PSC), Sandhya Thakkar (Q), Melanie Matula (PSC), Becky Sikes (PSC), Jacki Flood (PSC), Bev Knott (PSC), Susan White-DePace (PSC) and Lauren Ambrose (PSC)
  • Employee Rideshare Improvements
    Troy Hawkins (ES) and Jarod Kelly (ES)
  • Water Fountain Replacement/Bottle Fill Stations
    John Weizeorick (XSD) and Ken Belcher (AES)
  • Cigarette Litter Cleanup
    Tracy Rager (EGS) and Guy Pandola (EGS)

Shoe and clothing donation through May 1

There is still time to bring in your used or unwanted shoes and clothing. To date, we have collected 892 pounds. The recycling event will continue until May 1. Place shoes and clothing in one of four collection bins located in the following parking lots: Building 460 (Guest House); Building 440 West Lot; Building 360; Building 205 Remote/North. Shoes and clothing in wearable condition will be sent for resale to thrift stores, consignment shops and other secondhand clothing markets in the U.S. and abroad. Shoes and clothing not in wearable condition will be repurposed in other products (furniture stuffing, home insulation, padding, etc.).

  • “Polymer Upcycling” presented by Max Delferro (CSE)
  • “Water Management and Sustainability” presented by Jake Zappala (PHY)
