Bill Toter, Damon Simpson and Doug Carvelli discuss a weldment for part of an external air chamber assembly for the Chemistry Group.

Central Shops is changing its name to Custom Manufacturing Solutions — Central Shops (CMS-CS). The new name was selected by the staff.

“When Central Shops opened decades ago, our name said it all,” said Department Manager, Bob Swale. “We were the one place to go to have things like lab hoods and ventilation made to order, but our focus and capabilities have grown along with Argonne. The new name is more about what we do, not just where we work.”

In recent years, the CMS-CS designers and engineers have focused more on design consultation, fabricating unique parts, creating new manufacturing processes and making complicated repairs to existing lab instruments.

“There’s a huge amount of knowledge and expertise to tap into here,” observed Swale. “Talk to us about how to solve your problem. Let us work through it, even if you’re manufacturing off-site. Chances are we’ll be able to find ways to save you time and money in the long run.”

CMS-CS will continue to offer all their current services:

  • Engineering and design consultation
  • Welding, brazing and heat treatment
  • Custom parts manufacturing and machining
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Inspection and testing
  • Equipment maintenance and repair
  • Optical element and instrument fabrication

Working with CMS-CS can be arranged through Vector or by calling Bob Swale, at ext. 2-6526 or Doug Carvelli, operations supervisor, at ext. 2-5974 or  Bill Toter, senior welding engineer, at ext. 2-7342.
