“High-Resolution Regional-to-Continental Scale Simulation of Surface Hydrology for Current and Future Climate States” by Chief Scientist/Department Head V. Rao Kotamarthi (EVS)
Abstract
High-spatial resolution projections of flood risk with changing climate is of interest to stakeholders. This information is of use for developing adaptation strategies to mitigate impacts to critical infrastructure, operations, public safety, and health in both the public and private sectors. In this project we develop the capability at Argonne for performing continental scale, high-spatial resolution surface hydrology simulations using the high-performance computing resources at Argonne. We have adapted a community model to perform simulations over the contiguous United States at a spatial resolution of 200m and perform simulations over decadal time scales. These simulations produced large datasets that allow us to estimate uncertainty in the projected changes in water depth (flood levels) over each of these grid cells and estimate risk from flooding for users.
Biography
V. Rao Kotamarthi is an atmospheric scientist in the Environmental Science division, where he serves as the department lead for Climate and Earth System Science and chief scientist for the division. Kotamarthi has 30 years of experience in regional scale modeling of atmosphere, climate, air quality, and aerosols. He serves as a principal investigator for projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Biological and Environmental Research, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and private sector sponsors.
