“Developing a Universal Superconducting Undulator” by Senior Physicist Yury Ivanyushenkov (ASD)

Abstract

Undulators are special magnets that become sources of intense X-ray radiation once they are installed on an electron storage ring like the one at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The APS Upgrade requires an undulator that can generate both planar and circular polarized radiation. A concept of such a device has been developed and is currently under study. Details of a suggested super conducting arbitrarily polarizing emitter, or SCAPE, are provided in this presentation along the results of the magnetic measurements of its prototype.

Biography

Yury Ivanyushenkov is a senior physicist in the APS Accelerator Systems division. He leads development of novel superconducting undulators for the APS. His team has built and installed two planar superconducting undulators for the APS storage ring and a helical one, making the APS the only synchrotron light source user facility in the U.S. with superconducting undulators in user operation.
