The Leadership Institute is inviting nominations for Argonne’s first Postdoctoral Performance Awards to recognize outstanding achievement by postdoctoral appointees.
Statements of intent to nominate are due to the Postdoctoral Program Lead via email on Friday, July 15. The email should include the nominee’s name, division, area of expertise and award category. The nominator will then be asked to complete a full nomination form, including an essay supporting the basis for the nomination, which is due by Friday, July 29.
Recipients will receive a monetary award and a plaque, which will be presented at the Annual Postdoctoral Research and Career Symposium on Thursday, October 6, 2016.
The awards are sponsored by Deputy Director for Programs Al Sattelberger, Deputy Director for Science Matt Tirrell and Deputy Director for Operations Paul Kearns, who will oversee the selection process.
Nominees must be current postdoctoral appointees; Argonne Scholars (Named Fellows, Margaret Butler Fellows, and Wilkinson Fellows) are not eligible. The nomination is limited to work performed at Argonne during the nominee’s postdoctoral appointment.
Nominations will be reviewed by committees of subject matter experts in each of the three award areas:
- Applied research seeks solutions to problems integral to the laboratory’s strategic missions through the development of new materials, methods, solutions and technologies, building on fundamental knowledge and bridging engineering advances.
- Basic research encompasses fundamental, theoretical and discovery science that seeks understanding of systems and the creation of new knowledge.
- Engineering research takes fundamental knowledge and applied solutions to the next level through application to real-world problems, designing process improvements and delivering final products.
Outstanding performance may be shown through:
- Significant intellectual contributions to the nominee’s research field reflected in publications, patents, reports, presentations or research highlights
- Ingenuity in problem solving demonstrated through development of new methods, engineering solutions or tools with a significant impact on the research community
- Collaborative and leadership ability
- Significant contributions to Argonne and DOE missions
The award recipients will be selected by Wednesday, August 31, and the recipients will be notified shortly thereafter.
