All are welcome to join us on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at 11 a.m. in Building 241, Room A323, for a presentation and discussion as part of Argonne’s artificial intelligence (AI) in science and engineering town hall meeting series, hosted by Physical Sciences and Engineering. Yuxin Chen will present “Bayesian Experimental Design in Physical Sciences.”
Abstract
How can we intelligently acquire information for decision making, when facing a vast space of possible data? In this talk, I will focus on Bayesian experimental design problems that arise naturally in the physical sciences, and present how we can develop principled approaches that actively extract information, identify the most relevant data for the tasks, and make effective decisions under uncertainty. I will talk about a few practical challenges in real-world decision-making systems such as multi-fidelity feedback signals and complex constraints. I will elaborate on how to address these practical concerns on a variety of application domains, ranging from nanophotonics, protein engineering to cosmic discovery.
The purpose of the meetings is to build a community and a network of collaborators across divisions and directorates to help catalyze collaborative projects involving development and use of AI in science and engineering. This will enable Argonne to capture major anticipated external funding in the scientific areas over the next five years. Ideas and discussions shared at these meetings will also help articulate a science-driven strategy for AI applications, and areas where Argonne should claim national and international leadership.
Interested in presenting?
- We are broadening discussion topics to include tutorials and other information. We do not want to limit presentations only to ongoing or potential AI-related science topics.
- We are looking for (and encouraging) volunteer presenters from across all divisions. We particularly want to encourage cross-directorate and cross-divisional interactions.
- To sign up, go to the Box directory at, “PSE AI in Science Townhall Reboot” and sign up on the spreadsheet (enter your name at the appropriate date, your email, a title or topic for your presentation, and any other relevant information), or contact Olle Heinonen, Becky Rank, or Teresa Sokolowski.
For questions, contact Olle Heinonen.
