Video of a panel discussion focusing on how scientists and engineers can influence national science policy has been posted on the JumpStart website on Inside Argonne.

In the video, the five-member panel talks about their assignments in Washington, D.C., how their experiences changed their careers, and the need for more trained scientists to be involved in assignments in the nation’s capital. The meeting concludes with a lively question-and-answer session.

Panel members were:

  • Sapana Vora, a cancer biologist specializing in inherited risk genetics for acute leukemia. She joined the State Department’s Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP) within the Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow in 2015.
  • Sarah DeLeo, currently an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the Department of Defense in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense. Prior to her current position, Sarah worked with Board on Health Care Services at the Institute of Medicine as a Mirzayan Fellow and later as a Research Associate
  • Ron Faibish, who currently leads Argonne’s various Energy System initiatives and associated program development opportunities. Since joining Argonne more than 13 years ago, Faibish has worked as a Principal Chemical and Nuclear Engineer.
  • Aaron Greco, a Principal Materials Scientist in Argonne’s Energy Systems Division. He was detailed to DOE headquarters in Washington D.C. to work with the Wind and Water Power Technology Office as a laboratory liaison and technical advisor on wind turbine drivetrain technology.
  • Marius Stan, a Senior Computational Scientist in Argonne’s Energy and Global Security Directorate. He recently completed a two year assignment as National Technical Director and Senior Advisor on Advanced Modeling and Simulation at the Department of Energy, in Washington, D.C.

The JumpStart series is a friendly, informal forum for employees to develop new tools and knowledge that will enable individual and collective success.

The format is a monthly brown-bag meeting at lunchtime in the Building 213 Cafeteria. Meetings include 30 to 45 minutes of presentation followed by Q&A.
