You’re invited to attend the latest Health and Employee Wellness class, “Hip-hip-hooray! Healthy hips & tips.”  Led by Physical Therapist Assistant JoAnn “Joni” Garcia (HEW), the 20-minute interactive lunchtime class will focus on exercises and stretches you can do to keep your hips strong and limber.

Five tips to keep your hips happy

  • Stretch your hips before starting each day and especially prior to exercise.
    • There are multiple ways to stretch the same muscle; lay down, stand up or sit in a chair (do what feels the easiest to you).
  • Keep your hips strong while standing at your kitchen sink.
    • You’ll learn what to do in the class.
  • Know that some hip pain is caused by low-back issues.
    • Keep your core strong, but do so in back-neutral positions. (Learn how in November’s back class).
  • Be aware of your hip posture.
    • Work towards breaking the habit of crossing and sitting on your legs.
  • Improve your balance exercises.
    • Improved balance keeps hips, knees and ankles strong.

Employee feedback from previous exercise and injury prevention classes

“I found the material provided by Joni and her presentation delivery was top shelf.  She demonstrated great command of the material and just the right infusion of humor to keep the audience engaged.”

— Energy Systems employee

“I just wanted to tell you how helpful these sessions are. I didn’t realize that for most of my life, I have exercised incorrectly. It was quite eye opening and very informative.  The session was well attended and I hope we can have more like it.”

— Technology Development and Commercialization Division employee

I attended Joni’s class today and had a great time. Her demonstration of proper techniques to stretch and/or strengthen shoulders was valuable. Her presentation was informative, easy to understand and peppered with some jokes. I’ve heard from two people that the back class was helpful and that the two people have made some posture changes that have already started to help them.  I’m glad Argonne allows HEW to make these types of presentations and I hope that you’ll be able to continue to provide them. There are real benefits to employees and HEW is greatly appreciated.

— Nuclear Waste Management employee

“You handled the class very well and your presentation was really good. You gave practical advice very quickly and with a sense of humor. I thought your slides with the words and photos were excellent. They were very high quality for the message and the overall presentation format and content.”

— Communications, Education and Public Affairs Division employee
