The Energy and Global Security (EGS) directorate is proud to announce 16 winners for this year’s EGS Excellence Award. This award recognizes individuals for their outstanding achievements and distinguished service. The award creation committee worked diligently to build a peer-nominated and peer-evaluated award process for three categories of awards: people, process and projects.

EGS Excellence People Award

The People Award recognizes individuals who have had a significant impact on the internal or external community through leadership, outreach and commitment and demonstrate strong leadership by providing guidance and motivation that inspires commitment from others. The committee is pleased to announce Laural Briggs (NE) as this year’s winner for her extraordinary leadership and many volunteered activities. Laural engages with the community, encouraging students and young women to become nuclear scientists and promotes the discovery and innovation of the Nuclear Engineering Division.

EGS Excellence Process Award

The Process Award recognizes individuals for going above and beyond to improve the function or efficiency of an internal program or workflow. The committee selected Karen White (NSF) for the improvement of an invoice system in the National Security Facility. Karen identified the flaws in the system and traveled to Washington D.C. to speak with DOE-IN about the development and implementation of a solution. As part of the solution, Karen has taken on extra responsibilities and has positively brought about change, improving the invoice process for Argonne and our sponsors.

EGS Excellence Project Award

The Project Award acknowledges the efforts of individuals in sponsor-funded, laboratory-directed or other project work from this past fiscal year. These projects have significant impact on the community, result in innovation or discovery and contribute to the laboratory’s capabilities and mission. The EGS Directorate is proud to acknowledge the team from the Nuclear Engineering Division that developed, designed and constructed a first-of-its-kind multipurpose neutron source facility in Ukraine. Because it uses low-enriched uranium, the facility helps support the U.S. effort to reduce international nuclear proliferation risks. The team included Yousry Gohar, Wendy Anderson, Bonnie Basiorka, Henry Belch, Yan Cao, Austin Grelle, Roger Kellogg, Adam Kraus, Elia Merzari, Young Soo Park, Tanju Sofu, Alberto Talamo, Caryn Warsaw and Zhaopeng Zhong.
