Applications for the 2017 Enrico Fermi (Named) Fellowship are now being accepted for appointments beginning on or after May 1, 2017. The deadline for submitting application materials is Friday, Oct. 14, 2016.
The Named Fellowships were initiated to attract highly talented postdoctoral scientists and engineers to Argonne. These fellowships carry a competitive salary with an additional stipend for research support. Appointments may be renewed on an annual basis for up to three years. To further facilitate the transition of the named fellows into Argonne programs and increase the retention of these promising scientific leaders, the third year of support will be provided 50 percent from the LDRD program and 50 percent from other sources.
These recent changes to the Fellowship Program were announced on Argonne Today and via memo. Additionally, information on the Named Fellowship Program has been moved from the Postdoctoral Program website to the Careers section on Argonne’s public website.
Candidates should have superb research qualifications and show promise of becoming leaders in their fields. Candidates are selected based on their record of achievement, academic accomplishments, and the strength of their research proposals. Proposals should demonstrate alignment with the strategic missions of the Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy. This should be clearly stated in the proposal.
Argonne staff considering sponsoring a candidate are strongly encouraged to consult their divisional representative on the Distinguished Fellowship Review Committee and to inform their division offices of their submission. Sponsors may only nominate one candidate per call. This includes co-nominations. Sponsors should read the sponsor guidelines to ensure the application package meets all requirements and expectations.
Applicants should read the application instructions before applying. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. Sponsors should advise their candidate to be aware of the deadline.
The sponsor nomination letter should address the sponsor’s relationship with the applicant, the qualifications of the applicant in the context of their field, how the applicant’s research aligns with Argonne’s strategic missions, and potential for future growth. It is highly recommended that sponsors discuss their candidate’s proposal and qualifications prior to submitting the application materials.
The research project of selected fellows will be managed through the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program. Upon acceptance of the fellowship offer, sponsors will be expected to submit their candidate’s proposal into the LDRD proposal submission system and mentor candidates throughout the fellowship appointment to LDRD guidelines and to meet reporting requirements.
The review process will take at least six to eight weeks depending on the volume of applications, with the final decision by mid-December. Please alert the Postdoctoral Office and your division office if you will be on travel during the review period to ensure that your candidate receives full consideration.
