Fermilab, with sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will host the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) Fall Conference Thursday, Oct. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at Wilson Street & Kirk Road, Batavia. Over 100 undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs and early career faculty will attend the conference to equip themselves with the tools and information they need to advance to the next stage of their careers. DOE is sponsoring a number of sessions as a way to showcase the DOE laboratory complex and the great work being done within our laboratories.
Argonne’s Educational Programs is seeking laboratory participation for these sessions. Interested employees who wish to volunteer can contact Meridith Bruozas.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Showcase their research at the welcome reception
- Mentor a student from the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program on a physics-related project and participate in a speed networking session with 75 undergraduates
- Sponsor a student in the DOE Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) to participate in a speed networking session with 25 graduate students
- Network with other scientists with the possibility of being a co-principal investigator on a DOE Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) proposal to participate in a speed networking session with 25 early career faculty
Welcome Reception — Science at the National Labs
This is an informal networking session for conference participants to connect with scientific experts in the national labs. Each participating lab will have a space to showcase their research. Scientific posters, booths or demos are encouraged to help tell your research story. If you have more than one area of research to showcase, additional table space can be provided.
Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 6 – 8 p.m.
DOE Workforce Development for Teachers and Students Internship Session
This half-day session provides NSBP participants an opportunity to learn about the DOE student and faculty programs and the application process. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to ‘speed network’ with scientific mentors from the program. Graduate and early career faculty will have the opportunity to ‘speed network’ with scientific staff with the intention of applying for the Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) or the Visiting Faculty Program (VFP). Please identify scientific staff that have mentored a SULI student or interested in being a co-principal investigator on a SCGSR or VFP proposal.
Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Exhibit Booth
Argonne will be hosting a booth at the conference and visiting employees are encouraged to stop by to help facilitate connections with participants.
Friday Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29
