With the weather starting to cool down, you may be looking for ways to make your office or work space more comfortable. Check out this safety share on portable heater safety courtesy of Frank Curran (ESQ). Please share with your colleagues and/or staff.

Argonne guidelines for ordering portable heaters

  • The unit must be UL listed.
  • The unit must automatically shut off if it overheats.
  • The unit must have a “tip-over” switch. This will shut the unit off if it is tipped or knocked over.

Purchase requisitions submitted for heaters that do not have the above safety features will be disapproved.

Restrictions on where portable heaters can be placed

  • Combustible material should be kept at least three feet away from the heater. Do not place heater near drapes, paper, plastic trash cans, etc.
  • Electric heaters should be plugged directly into the wall outlets. The use of power strips or extension cords is not permitted.
  • Do not place heaters under desks while in use.
  • Always place the heater on a level, stable surface.

Turn off or unplug your heater!!!

  • Portable heaters must be turned off when you leave the area—EVERY time you leave the area. Heating elements should never be left unattended.
  • Unplug your portable heater if you will be absent for a prolonged period of time. Unplug the unit before going on vacation, out of town or before leaving for the weekend.

Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).

All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.
