This Halloween, keep a close eye out for little monsters…and kids with their parents…while you’re driving.

Scary statistics from the National Safety Council (NSC)

  • Darting or running into the road accounts for:
    • 70% of pedestrian deaths or injuries for kids five to nine years old
    • 45% of pedestrian deaths or injuries for kids 10 to 14 years old
  • October ranks #2 in motor vehicle deaths in the United States by month.
  • In 2014, there were 6,300 pedestrian deaths and 145,000 injuries involving pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents.

Safety tips for motorists from the NSC

  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.

Trick-or-treating safety tips are available online

All employees are encouraged to submit safety shares for inclusion in the Safety Share Library. Submission details are available on Inside Argonne.

Each month a safety share submitted by an individual will be selected to receive a Spot Award for demonstrated safety leadership. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
