A new Waste Management System (WMS) that will improve Argonne’s tracking and control of radioactive and chemical wastes will be rolled out on Jan. 3, 2017. The new WMS will consolidate legacy chemical and radioactive applications into a single web-based system, which will create a more user-friendly waste management disposition request process that clarifies the information needed to characterize and dispose of radioactive and chemical material. The system will also allow Waste Management personnel better internal tracking of waste material through the processing, repackaging and shipping disposition lifecycle.

The new WMS was developed by Argonne’s Computing and Information Systems Division in close collaboration with the Nuclear and Waste Management Division and a committee of system users. Custom-developed for use at Argonne, the new WMS has a number of enhancements and improvements for “cradle to grave” management of hazardous and radioactive waste containers that meets the packaging, processing and shipping compliance regulations of the lab and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

All employees who work with, or are responsible for, these wastes will be receiving more information about training, user testing and deadlines. The most important deadline is this: The last day to create and submit management disposition requests using the old systems is Dec. 16, and the system will be unavailable to users from Dec. 17, 2016 through Jan. 2, 2017 as the new system is deployed.
