Conceptual design of the power plant of the U.S.S. Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered ship, was performed at Argonne. Launched Jan. 21, 1954, the submarine made the first trek under the polar ice cap in 1958.

The Lemont Historical Society will host “It All Started Here,” a talk on Argonne’s role in the development of nuclear submarine propulsion, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2017 at the Lemont VFW, 15780 New Avenue, Lemont, Ill.

The talk will begin at 7 p.m. Call 630.257.73309 to reserve a seat. A donation of $10 is suggested to support the historical society and the Chicago submarine veterans, who plan to build a memorial.

For more information, see the Lemont Area Historical Society website.
