Bill Toter (FMS) received a Gold Spot Award in September 2016 for his vigilant approach to safety and for his findings during a recent audit.

Toter has long been known for his safe work ethic and for being forthright about safety concerns. As a senior welding engineer in Central Shops, he often encourages constructive safety discussions during the team’s morning safety talk, encouraging peers and staff to remain focused and careful throughout the workday.

He regularly reminds team members that safety is everyone’s responsibility and that “it begins with the person you look at in the mirror every day.”

Toter’s dedication and self-driven daily awareness campaign has helped to contribute to the lab’s positive safety culture.

Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).

If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting Spot Award (ANL-758).

The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.

Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
