Where there’s warmth, there could be fire…

Families gather together to enjoy Thanksgiving Day feasts. However, cooking is no small feat. When there are many dishes and hours of preparation, there can be plenty of opportunities for a fire.

Top 5 tips on how to prevent cooking fires

  1. Don’t fry the turkey. Turkey fryers that use cooking oil, as currently designed, are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer.
  2. Don’t drink (alcohol) and cook. Be alert!
  3. Watch the pots. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food. If you are simmering, baking or roasting, check your work regularly.
  4. Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop including towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, etc.
  5. Keep an eye on the kids. Keep children away from the stove and hot oven.

Tips on how to handle a cooking fire

  1. Small grease fire in a pot. Put a lid on it and turn off the burner. Leave the pot covered until it is completely cooled.
  2. A fire in the oven. Turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  3. A larger fire. Get out, close the door and call 9-1-1.
